PE Design
Upgrading to Version 6

As you probably know lots of new features were added to PE Design in version 6. If you own and use this software, it might be worth your while considering an upgrade.

At the time of this writing there is a lot of confusion about the upgrade to version 6. I’ve talked to a lot of folks recently that are receiving inaccurate information from their dealers regarding upgrades for their older version of PE Design. In fact, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of information about these upgrades anywhere. It’s as though they don’t want you to know they are available, but they are. Let me see if I can clear up some of the confusion.

If you own an earlier version of PE Design, you can upgrade to version 6 for a fraction of the cost of the entire program. Even if you own the original version 1, there is an upgrade that will work for you. The upgrades are available in two different packages. You determine which package to buy based on the version you currently own.

The first package is for owners of PE Design versions 1 thru 4. If you own one of these versions, the package will include three items. You will receive a CD with the new version 6 software, a new USB reader/writer box, and one blank original design card. The older serial reader/writer boxes that came with versions 1 thru 4 will not work with version 6. This package normally retails for around $299.99.

The second package is for owners of PE Design version 5. All you will get is a CD containing the new version 6 software. The package does not include a new reader/writer box or original design card. The reader/writer box and card that came with version 5 will work equally as well with version 6, so there is no need for a replacement. This package normally retails for around $249.99.

If you own Palette, rather than PE Design, the upgrades work the same way. There is really no difference between the two except for the name. Nor does it matter which upgrade you purchase. If you own PE Design you can purchase the PE Design upgrade or the Palette upgrade. Either will install just fine. The same is true if you own Palette. You can purchase the upgrade for Palette or PE Design. I know this works because I owned version 2 of PE Design and purchased the Palette 6 upgrade. I had no problem with the installation. It worked flawlessly. Knowing this might help you get your upgrade sooner. You can purchase the one that is more readily available.

From what I’ve been told, Brother has been unable to keep up with the demand. Availability of these upgrade packages seems to be limited. If your dealer does not normally stock the upgrades, he should be able to order one for you.

If you really want to upgrade to version 6, but thought you had to purchase the entire program at full retail price, you now know that’s just not true.
